Free website planning tools

The short answer

Three free tools to help you choose and budget: a builder finder that suggests a short list from five questions, a calculator for the true 3-year cost of a site, and a table of exit scores showing what you can take with you if you leave a platform.

Builder finder

Answer five quick questions about the site you want and how you’ll run it. The builder finder gives you a short list of platforms, with a plain reason for each pick.

Use it when you’re starting from zero and the number of choices feels like too much. Then read the review for each pick before you buy.

3-year cost calculator

The price on a builder’s homepage is only part of the bill. The cost calculator adds the plan, domain renewals after the free first year, email, paid apps and transaction fees on sales.

Use it when you’ve narrowed it to two or three platforms and want to see the real total before you pay.

Exit score table

Every platform we cover gets a score from 0 to 10 for how much of your site you can take with you if you leave. The exit score table shows the scores side by side, with a short note on each.

A score of 2 or 3 means most of the site stays behind if you go. A 9 or 10 means you can take nearly everything, though you may need a developer to set it up again. Use the table before you commit, especially if your site is central to your business.

What the tools can and can’t do

The tools use the same facts as our reviews, taken from official pricing pages and help docs and checked October 2026. Their results are estimates, not quotes, and vendors change prices often.

Our research method explains how we gather facts, score exits and count 3-year cost. For the background, read what a website costs.

Questions people ask

Are the tools free to use?

Yes. All three tools on Web Building are free to use.

How accurate is the cost calculator?

It uses official list prices checked October 2026, but the result is an estimate. Taxes, promotions and your own choices will change the real total.

What does a low exit score mean?

It means more of your site stays behind if you leave, so moving later takes more rebuilding. It does not mean the platform is bad to build on.
