Comparison

Wix vs WordPress: which is better in 2026?

The short answer

Choose Wix if you want an all-in-one builder with hosting, a free plan and AI drafting, and you do not want to maintain software. Choose self-hosted WordPress if you want to own the site: it cost about $400 less over three years in our small-business example and scores 10/10 on exit versus Wix's 3/10. The trade-off is that updates, backups and security become your job.

The quick verdict

Pick Wix if you want one company to handle everything: hosting, the editor and the domain, on one bill. You can start on a free plan, and Wix Harmony can draft a site from a prompt. There is no software for you to update.

Pick self-hosted WordPress if you want to own the site. In our example it costs less in cash over three years, it runs any of 60,000+ plugins, and any WordPress host can run it. It scores 10 out of 10 on our exit score; Wix scores 3. The price is your time, because updates, backups and security are your job.

This page compares Wix with WordPress you install on your own hosting (WordPress.org). For the hosted version run by Automattic, see WordPress.com vs WordPress.org.

For scale, W3Techs counts WordPress on 40.2% of all websites and Wix on 4.2%, as of October 2026.

Cost over 3 years

We priced the same small-business site on both: about 10 pages, a blog, a contact form, one business email address, and the option to take an online payment now and then. Wix Light cannot accept online payments, so Wix starts at Core here.

Cost itemWix CoreWordPress on SiteGround StartUp
Plan or hosting, 36 months$1,044$467.64
Domain, years 2 and 3$36.96$36.96
Email, 1 user, 3 years$252$252
Premium theme$0$177
3-year total$1,332.96$933.60

How we got there:

  • Wix: Core is $29 a month billed yearly, or $348 a year. Wix does not list a separate renewal price, so we assume today’s price holds.
  • WordPress hosting: SiteGround StartUp is $2.99 a month prepaid for 12 months ($35.88), then renews at $17.99 a month ($431.76 for years 2 and 3), per SiteGround’s pricing page. The renewal is six times the intro price, so always budget for it.
  • Domain: both include a free first year. Neither publishes its renewal price, so we budget $18.48 a year, Namecheap’s published .com renewal.
  • Email: Google Workspace Business Starter at $7 per user a month on the annual plan, or $84 a year, on both.
  • Theme: GeneratePress Premium at $59 a year, the theme add-on we use on the WordPress sites we build. The WordPress.org directory also has thousands of free themes, so this line is optional.
  • Left out: card processing, paid Wix apps, paid plugins and sales tax.

WordPress comes out $399.36 cheaper in this example. Notice where the money goes: on Wix, nearly all of it is the plan. On WordPress, the biggest line is the hosting renewal, not the intro price. When you compare hosts, compare what they charge in year two.

Two other hosting choices show the range:

  • Bluehost Starter: $3.99 a month on a 36-month term ($143.64 up front), renewing at $9.99 a month. That brings the WordPress total to $609.60.
  • Kinsta Single 35k (managed WordPress hosting): $30 a month billed yearly. With the domain bought at Namecheap ($11.28 the first year), the WordPress total rises to $1,557.24, more than Wix.
Your time is a cost too. We build on WordPress every week, and the upkeep is real: core, theme and plugin updates, backups and security checks. Wix handles that for you. If you will not do it yourself, budget for managed hosting or someone to maintain the site.

Design and ease of use

Wix is the faster start. Its drag-and-drop editor lets you place elements where you want them, and its plans page says it offers thousands of templates. Hosting is included, so you sign up and start building.

WordPress asks more of you on day one. You pick a web host, install WordPress (many hosts do this for you), then choose a theme and a few plugins before you write a word. That setup is the part beginners underestimate.

After setup, WordPress gives you more room. There are thousands of free themes in the WordPress.org directory, plus commercial ones. Page builders such as Elementor Pro start at $49 a year for one site. You also get full access to the code: PHP, CSS and JavaScript, custom themes and custom plugins.

On Wix, custom code depends on the plan, and the top Business Elite plan lists an “advanced developer platform.” Storage is capped by plan: 2 GB on Light, 50 GB on Core, 100 GB on Business and unlimited on Business Elite. On WordPress, limits come from your host, such as 10 GB on SiteGround StartUp.

Store, blog and SEO

Selling

Wix takes online payments from Core, with store features stepping up from basic on Core to standard on Business and advanced on Business Elite. Wix says it supports more than 80 payment options worldwide. Its US card rate and any transaction fee were not published on the pages we checked.

WordPress sells through WooCommerce, a free plugin with a 0% platform fee. You pay your payment gateway’s rates, such as Stripe or PayPal. Many extra features are paid extensions billed yearly; WooCommerce Subscriptions, for example, is $279 a year.

Blogging

Both have a blog. Wix pairs its blog with CMS collections for structured content. WordPress started as blogging software and is a full CMS: posts, pages, categories, tags, revisions, comments and custom content types.

The big difference is portability. Wix’s help center says blog posts cannot be exported to other platforms. A WordPress blog exports in a standard format any WordPress site can import.

SEO

Wix includes built-in SEO tools; we did not re-check their details for this comparison. WordPress core has clean permalinks and XML sitemaps (since version 5.5). Plugins such as Rank Math add page-level meta controls, schema and redirects. We use Rank Math on the WordPress sites we build.

Both can rank. WordPress gives you more control if search traffic is the main goal, as with a content-heavy site.

AI features

Wix launched Wix Harmony on January 21, 2026, its flagship AI website builder. It combines prompt-based building, which Wix calls “vibe coding,” with Wix’s visual editor. An AI agent named Aria handles plain-language requests with your whole site in view. You can also create a site from a single prompt, and Wix names a separate AI design tool, Wixel. Harmony is rolling out in English first.

WordPress itself does not include an AI site builder. AI writing and design tools, if you want them, come from third-party plugins you choose and pay for separately.

If AI drafting is a big reason you are shopping, Wix has the clear edge today.

Wix says your site must run on Wix’s servers, and its help center says it cannot be exported for another host. Blog posts cannot be exported. Products export to CSV in files of up to 5,000 rows, without digital products, and CMS collections export too. Everything else gets rebuilt.

WordPress exports posts, pages, comments, categories and tags as a standard XML file. That file links to your images rather than including them, so when you move hosts, copy the media folder too or take a full backup. Themes and plugins are plain files on your server, and the database is yours. Any WordPress host can run the site as-is.

Both score full marks on the domain. If there is any chance you will outgrow Wix, register the domain at an independent registrar and connect it to Wix, so the address never has to move with the site.

Moving from Wix to WordPress later is a rebuild, not an import. WooCommerce can import a product CSV, which helps, but blog posts must be copied by hand. See our guide to leaving your website builder before you start.

Which one should you pick?

Pick Wix if

  • You want to build today without choosing a host or installing anything.
  • You want a free plan to try before you pay.
  • You want AI to draft the site, then edit it visually.
  • You would rather pay more each month than maintain software.

Pick WordPress if

  • You want to own every file and be free to switch hosts.
  • Your site is content-heavy or depends on search traffic.
  • You want to sell without a platform fee through WooCommerce.
  • You, or someone you pay, will keep up with updates and backups.

Questions people ask

Is Wix easier than WordPress?

Yes, for getting started. Wix includes hosting and a drag-and-drop editor, while WordPress needs you to pick a host, a theme and plugins, then keep them updated.

Is WordPress cheaper than Wix?

Usually, in cash. In our 3-year example WordPress on SiteGround came to $933.60 versus $1,332.96 for Wix Core, but managed WordPress hosting can cost more than Wix, and upkeep takes your time.

Can I move my Wix site to WordPress?

Not with an export. Wix sites must run on Wix's servers and blog posts cannot be exported, so you rebuild the site. Products can be exported to CSV and imported into WooCommerce.

Is WordPress better than Wix for SEO?

WordPress gives you more control through plugins like Rank Math, which help with meta tags, schema and redirects. Wix has built-in SEO tools, and either can rank with good content.

Does Wix have a free plan?

Yes. The free plan shows Wix ads and uses a Wix-branded URL, and you need Core or higher to take online payments.
