Comparison

Astra vs GeneratePress: which WordPress theme is better in 2026?

The short answer

Both are free classic WordPress themes with paid upgrades. Astra Pro is cheaper to start for one site, $69 for the first year covering 3 sites, against $99 a year for GeneratePress One on 1 site. For 10 sites, GeneratePress is cheaper: $447 over 3 years at today's price, against $797 for Astra's Essential Toolkit. Pick Astra for Elementor or Beaver Builder sites and a free header builder; pick GeneratePress for block editor sites and a 30-day refund window.

Web Building also builds websites for clients. That never changes our picks, their order or what we say about a platform. How we make money

The quick verdict

Pick Astra if you build with Elementor, Beaver Builder or Spectra and want a free drag-and-drop header builder and lots of starter templates. Astra Pro is the cheaper way in: $69 for the first year, covering 3 sites, or $249 lifetime.

Pick GeneratePress if you build in the block editor and want a lean theme with a 30-day refund window. GeneratePress One is $99 a year for 1 site, and it gets cheaper per site as you grow: $149 a year covers 10 sites. Both themes are free to start, and both run on WordPress, so your content stays yours either way.

We build on WordPress every week, and we build our own sites on GeneratePress. We have no affiliate deal with any theme company, and that doesn’t change this comparison. Prices come from each vendor’s pricing page, in US dollars before tax.

Sources: Astra pricing and GeneratePress pricing. Neither theme has the accessibility-ready tag on its WordPress.org listing. That is the tag status only, not a verdict on how accessible either theme is.

GP Premium is now sold only inside GeneratePress One, at $99, $149 or $199 a year, or $596 lifetime. If you already own a GP Premium license, GeneratePress says it “keeps working and renewing as it does now.” An older GeneratePress page still shows One at $149 a year for up to 500 sites; we use the current pricing page.

Cost over 3 years

Both themes run on self-hosted WordPress, so hosting comes first. We use the same baseline as the rest of the site: Bluehost Starter at $3.99 a month on a 36-month term ($143.64 upfront, renewing at $9.99 a month), $36.96 for the domain’s second and third years and one Google Workspace inbox at $252.00. That’s $432.60 over 3 years before any theme.

One site

OptionTheme mathTheme, 3 yearsWhole site, 3 years
Either free theme$0$0$432.60
Astra Pro (3 sites)$69 x 3 (assumes today’s price)$207$639.60
Astra Pro lifetime$249 once$249$681.60
GeneratePress One, 1 site$99 x 3 (assumes today’s price)$297$729.60
Astra Pro + AI (3 sites)$99 + $149 + $149$397$829.60
GeneratePress One lifetime (100 sites)$596 once$596$1,028.60

Astra doesn’t print a renewal price for Astra Pro on its own, and GeneratePress says only that its plans renew yearly. So those two rows assume you keep paying today’s price; that’s our assumption, not a vendor promise. Astra’s +AI plans do print their renewals, which is why Pro + AI comes to $397.

For one site, Astra Pro is $90 cheaper over 3 years at today’s prices, and it covers 3 sites instead of 1. GeneratePress lifetime only makes sense if you plan to run many sites.

Ten sites

Bluehost Starter allows 10 websites, so hosting stays at $143.64. Domains and email are per site and cost the same with either theme, so we leave them out here.

OptionTheme mathTheme, 3 yearsWith hosting
GeneratePress One, 10 sites$149 x 3 (assumes today’s price)$447$590.64
Astra Essential Toolkit + AI lifetime$549 once$549$692.64
GeneratePress One lifetime (100 sites)$596 once$596$739.64
Astra Essential Toolkit + AI (10 sites)$199 + $299 + $299$797$940.64

Essential Toolkit is Astra’s cheapest plan that covers 10 sites, since Astra Pro covers 3. It also adds Spectra Pro, premium starter templates and Ultimate Addons for Elementor. Per site, that’s $44.70 for GeneratePress against $79.70 for Astra over 3 years. Astra’s lifetime plans include its AI platform and hosted sites for 3 years only.

Design and ease of use

Both are classic themes: you set colors, fonts and layout in the WordPress Customizer. The difference is how you build what the Customizer can’t do. (New to the terms? See template vs theme and page builder.)

Headers and footers. Astra’s free theme has a drag-and-drop header and footer builder with a logo, menus, search, cart, a button, HTML and widgets, plus a mobile menu. Astra Pro adds more elements, such as up to 10 buttons and a language switcher. GeneratePress has no drag-and-drop header builder. You set the header layout in the Customizer, and anything custom is built as a Block Element with GenerateBlocks, which needs GeneratePress One.

Page builders. Astra lists the block editor, Spectra (Brainstorm Force’s block plugin), Elementor and Beaver Builder. GeneratePress is built around the block editor and its own GenerateBlocks plugin, and says “You don’t need a bloated page builder.” Its WordPress.org description says it’s compatible with Elementor and Beaver Builder too. If you’re picking a builder as well, see Elementor vs Divi.

Hooks. A hook is a spot in the theme’s code where you can insert content, like a banner above the header. Astra Pro’s custom layouts and GeneratePress’s Elements both let you place content at hook locations with display rules. GeneratePress’s free theme also exposes hooks and filters for developers who write PHP.

Starter templates. Astra’s Starter Templates plugin is free with free templates; its premium templates come in the Toolkit bundles. Astra gives two different counts (“300+” on the pricing page, “145+” on the homepage). GeneratePress One includes “80+ starter sites.”

Speed. We don’t rank either as faster. Astra says it uses “less than 50 KB of resources” and can “load in just 0.5 seconds,” with no test conditions given. GeneratePress says a fresh install “adds less than 10kb (gzipped) to your page size.” These are vendor claims that measure different things. Your host, images and plugins affect speed far more.

Requirements and updates. On WordPress.org, Astra requires WordPress 5.3 and was last updated October 15, 2026. GeneratePress requires WordPress 6.5 and PHP 7.4, and its free theme was last updated December 1, 2025.

Store, blog and SEO

Both themes run online stores through WooCommerce, which charges no platform fee of its own; your payment processor’s fees still apply. Astra Pro’s WooCommerce module is the deeper of the two: shop grid settings, quick view, a modern cart, distraction-free and 2-step checkout, and single-product layouts. It also supports Easy Digital Downloads and LearnDash. GeneratePress One adds WooCommerce colors, typography and layouts.

For blogs, Astra Pro adds grid, list and masonry layouts. GeneratePress One lets you build post and archive templates as Elements.

Neither theme is an SEO tool. WordPress itself handles clean URLs and XML sitemaps, and an SEO plugin handles titles, schema and redirects. Our SEO guide covers what to set up.

AI features

Astra’s +AI plans add AI site generation and hosted sites: one on Pro + AI, which also includes a free domain for the first year, two on Essential and five on Business. Business Toolkit adds an AI Site Planner. On lifetime plans, the AI platform and hosting run for 3 years from purchase.

GeneratePress lists GeneratePress AI as “coming soon” inside GeneratePress One. There is nothing AI-based to use today, according to its pricing page.

Leaving later

Your site stays ordinary WordPress with either theme, which scores 10/10 on our exit scores. You own the files, the database and the domain. What doesn’t move is the theme’s own design work.

If you switch themes

This is general WordPress behavior. Posts, pages and media stay in the database. Customizer settings are saved per theme, so colors, fonts and layout choices don’t carry over. Pages built with the block editor, GenerateBlocks, Spectra or Elementor stay in your content, because they belong to those plugins.

Theme-only features stay behind. Astra Pro custom layouts and header builder settings, and GeneratePress Elements, attach to each theme’s own hook locations, so they won’t display under another theme. Neither vendor documents this, so treat it as general guidance about how theme features work.

If you stop paying

Astra’s pricing FAQ says “Your existing sites keep working.” Updates, support, AI features and new premium templates stop, and any site hosted inside an Astra plan goes offline when the subscription ends.

GeneratePress’s current pages don’t say. A 2019 forum reply from its creator, Tom Usborne, says “GP Premium will continue to work, but you won’t receive future updates or premium support in this forum.” Renewing an expired license restarts updates and support right away.

Before you switch. Copy the site to a staging site, switch themes there and check every page. Rebuild headers, footers and any hooked content before you go live. Our guide to leaving your website builder covers bigger moves.

Pick Astra if…

  • You build with Elementor, Beaver Builder or Spectra.
  • You want a drag-and-drop header and footer builder in the free theme.
  • You run up to 3 sites and want the lowest yearly start ($69) or a $249 lifetime license.
  • You want deep WooCommerce options or AI site generation.

Pick GeneratePress if…

  • You build in the block editor and want to skip a separate page builder.
  • You run 10 or more sites: $149 a year covers 10, $199 covers 100.
  • You want a 30-day refund window instead of 14.
  • You’re comfortable building custom headers with blocks instead of a drag-and-drop builder.

Neither? Look at…

  • Kadence or Blocksy for block editor sites with a free drag-and-drop header builder. Both carry the accessibility-ready tag on WordPress.org.
  • Hello Elementor if you build the whole site in Elementor.
  • Twenty Twenty-Five if you want WordPress’s free block theme and nothing to renew.
  • Divi if you want one visual builder for unlimited sites.

Our WordPress themes guide compares all nine on price, renewal and 3-year cost.

Questions people ask

Is GeneratePress faster than Astra?

We don't rank either as faster. GeneratePress says a fresh install adds less than 10kb (gzipped), and Astra says it uses less than 50 KB of resources, but these are vendor claims measured in different ways. Your host, images and plugins matter more.

Is Astra free?

Yes. The free Astra theme on WordPress.org includes a drag-and-drop header and footer builder and free starter templates. Astra Pro, with custom layouts, hooks and WooCommerce options, starts at $69 for the first year for 3 sites, or $249 lifetime.

Can I still buy GP Premium by itself?

Not as a new buyer. GP Premium now comes only inside GeneratePress One, at $99, $149 or $199 a year for 1, 10 or 100 sites, or $596 lifetime for 100 sites. Existing GP Premium licenses keep renewing.

Can I switch from Astra to GeneratePress without losing content?

Your posts, pages and media stay. Your Customizer settings and theme-only features, such as Astra Pro custom layouts and header builder settings, don't carry over, so plan to rebuild headers and footers and test on a staging copy first.

Which is cheaper for many sites?

GeneratePress. GeneratePress One covers 10 sites for $149 a year ($447 over 3 years at today's price), while Astra's cheapest 10-site plan, Essential Toolkit + AI, comes to $797 over 3 years with its stated renewals.
