GoDaddy domain registrar review: what a .com really costs
The short answer
GoDaddy works as a registrar, but it is not a cheap place to keep a domain. Its $0.01 .com needs a 3-year purchase, and the extra years are $22.99 each, so you pay $45.99 up front for three years. Privacy and a transfer lock are free; email is not.
The short version
- .com first year: $0.01, but only if you buy 3 years at once.
- Renewal: $22.99 a year for the extra years, then GoDaddy’s “then-current retail price.”
- 3-year total: $45.99, paid up front.
- Right for: people who already use GoDaddy hosting or its builder and want one bill. If you only need a domain, you can keep a .com for less elsewhere.
A domain registrar is the company you rent your domain name from. This page covers GoDaddy only in that role. All details come from GoDaddy’s own pricing and help pages. We manage our own domains at Namecheap and Spaceship, not GoDaddy, and have no affiliate deal with any registrar.
What a .com really costs over three years
GoDaddy’s .com page shows “$0.01 /1st yr” with the fine print “3-year purchase required. Additional year(s) $22.99.” So the first bill covers all three years.
| Year 1 | Year 2 | Year 3 | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0.01 | $22.99 | $22.99 | $45.99 |
The arithmetic: $0.01 + $22.99 + $22.99 = $45.99, all charged at checkout.
GoDaddy’s .com page does not mention ICANN’s $0.20-a-year fee. Its transfer page mentions “ICANN registration fees, where appropriate.” If GoDaddy adds the fee at checkout, the three years come to $46.59 ($45.99 + $0.60). Check the checkout total.
There is a second offer. GoDaddy’s main domains page lists a .com for $2.99 with code GDWELCOME: “1-year term. New customers only.” No renewal price is shown with it. If you renew at the $22.99 regular price, three years cost $48.97 ($2.99 + $22.99 + $22.99), so the 3-year deal is cheaper.
Other popular endings
Most GoDaddy deals below also need a 3-year purchase. Renewal is the price per extra year.
| Ending | First year | Renewal | 3 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| .net | $0.01 (3-year purchase) | $24.99 | $49.99 |
| .org | $9.99 | Not stated (list price $23.99) | Not published |
| .co | $0.01 (3-year purchase) | $59.99 | $119.99 |
| .io | $0.01 (3-year purchase) | $89.99 | $179.99 |
The .co and .io renewals are high, so the 3-year bill is the number to watch. For help choosing an ending, see our guide to domain extensions.
What is included free
- WHOIS privacy: free. GoDaddy’s transfer page says “Free privacy protection forever.” It hides your name, address and phone from public lookups.
- Registrar transfer lock: listed as free on the domains page. It blocks transfers until you turn the lock off.
- DNS: “automated DNS” and free DNSSEC are listed. DNS is what points your domain at your website and email.
- Domain forwarding: free, so you can send the domain to another web address.
- SSL: free only with a GoDaddy hosting plan, per the domains page FAQ. It is not included with a domain alone.
- Two-factor login: GoDaddy accounts offer 2-step verification at sign-in and for risky actions. Turn it on the day you sign up.
Not included: email. There is no free mailbox with a domain. GoDaddy’s Email Forwarding help page says forwarding works only with “existing forwarding credits,” and that credits bundled with domain purchases can no longer be used.
Upsells to watch for
- Domain Protection: Full, Ultimate and Domain Ownership Protection plans. Ultimate adds “90 days to renew your domain if it accidentally expires due to failed billing.” Prices are not published on the pages we checked.
- Microsoft 365 email: Email Essentials is $1.99 a mailbox a month “for 1st 1-year term” (crossed-out price $8.99). The page does not state its renewal price. See our note on email hosting for what a mailbox is.
- Discount Domain Club: promises “up to 60% off domain registration.” The membership price is not published on the pages we checked.
- Website builder and hosting: offered alongside your domain. Our GoDaddy website builder review covers what those cost.
None of these is needed to own and use a domain. Free privacy and the free lock cover the basics.
Moving your domain away
- Turn off the domain lock, turn off Domain Privacy, and downgrade Domain Protection to none. GoDaddy can also prepare the domain for you.
- In your Domain Portfolio, pick the domain, choose “Transfer to Another Registrar,” and copy the authorization code. GoDaddy also emails it to you.
- Wait out the locks: no transfers within 60 days of a new registration or transfer. Domains bought as part of a bundle cannot move for 120 days.
- Start the transfer at your new registrar. GoDaddy says transfers “typically take 5-7 days.” Its help page mentions no transfer-out fee.
The 60-day rule comes from ICANN, which sets the rules for every registrar. Our guide to transferring a domain walks through every step.
Who it is right for, and who should look elsewhere
Right for:
- People who already run their site or email at GoDaddy and want one account and one bill.
- People who value the 24/7 human support GoDaddy’s domains page lists.
- People happy to pay 3 years up front and keep the domain at least that long.
Look elsewhere if:
- You want the lowest yearly bill for a .com. Several registrars renew for less; see our best domain registrars comparison.
- You want free email forwarding with your domain.
- You own a .co or .io and plan to keep it for years.
