Framer vs Lovable: do you need a website or an app?
The short answer
Choose Framer if you need a polished business website people read, with a built-in blog, from $10 a month billed yearly. Choose Lovable if you need an app people log into, with a database and logins, built by chatting with AI. Lovable costs more and varies with use, but scores 9/10 for leaving versus Framer's 2/10.

The quick verdict
Pick Framer if you need a good-looking business website: pages people read, a contact form, maybe a blog. It is a visual, design-first builder, it starts at $10 a month billed yearly, and its AI helps with design and writing. The trade-off is that you cannot take the site with you if you leave.
Pick Lovable if you need an app: something people log into and use, like a client portal, a booking system with accounts, or an internal tool. You build it by chatting, it comes with a database and logins, and you own the code. It costs more to run and has no easy editor for everyday content.
Website or app? A quick test
Most small businesses need a website, not an app. Ask yourself three questions:
- Do visitors need their own account? If people sign in to see their own orders, files or bookings, that is an app.
- Does the site store and change data? If it saves records, updates a dashboard or runs a workflow, that is an app.
- Is it mainly something people read? Service pages, an about page, a portfolio, a blog and a contact form make a website.
If you answered yes only to the last question, Framer, or another website builder, will be cheaper and easier to keep up to date. Lovable is a vibe coding tool: powerful, but built for software, not brochures.

Cost over 3 years
The two tools charge for different things. Framer charges mostly for the site and the people who edit it. Lovable charges mostly for AI work, because the AI is how you build and change anything.
How Framer pricing works
- Plan limits. Basic allows 30 pages, 1,000 CMS items and 50 GB of bandwidth. Pro allows 150 pages, 2,500 CMS items and 100 GB, and adds staging, branching and site redirects.
- Extra editors. Each extra Editor seat is $20 a month, and a Content Editor seat is $10 a month. Framer bills these monthly even on a yearly plan.
- AI credits. Free includes 500, Basic 1,000 a month and Pro 3,000 a month, shared across your workspace. You can build a Framer site without using AI at all, so these are a bonus, not a must.
- Domain. Basic and Pro include a free custom domain for the first year with yearly billing. Framer does not publish the renewal price.
How Lovable credits work
- Credits per message. According to Lovable’s plans and credits docs, a Build message costs 0.50 to 2.00 credits in Lovable’s examples, depending on how complex it is. Plan mode is 1 credit per message.
- What Pro includes. 100 monthly credits plus 5 daily Build credits, which works out to roughly 50 to 200 Build messages a month from the monthly credits.
- Top-ups. $15 per 50 credits on Pro.
- Running the app. Hosting is free, but backend activity and AI features inside your app are billed as usage-based “Run credits.”
Here is the key difference for a business owner. On Framer, changing a headline is free: you click and type. On Lovable, most changes are a prompt, and prompts use credits.
The worked example
Take a five-page website for a local service business with a short blog, one owner, one email mailbox and a .com domain name. Neither tool includes business email hosting, so we added Google Workspace. We priced the domain at Namecheap for both, because Framer does not publish what its free domain costs after year one.
| Cost item (3 years) | Framer Basic | Lovable Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Plan, billed yearly | $360 | $750 |
| .com domain at Namecheap | $48.24 | $48.24 |
| Google Workspace Business Starter, 1 user | $252 | $252 |
| Total | $660.24 | $1,050.24 to about $1,590.24 |
The domain line is Namecheap’s $11.28 first year plus two renewals at $18.48. Email is $7 per user a month on Google Workspace’s annual plan.
The Lovable range runs from staying inside your included credits to buying one $15 top-up every month for three years, and it does not include Run credits. Framer’s total rises if you need Pro ($1,080 for the plan alone over three years) or add an editor ($20 a month, or $720 over three years).

Design and ease of use
Framer works like a design tool. You place and style elements on a canvas, start from a template in the Framer Marketplace, and publish. It is built for designers who want pixel-level control, and it handles the technical side for you: pre-rendering, image optimization and a global network of servers. Developers can add custom code and React code components.
Lovable starts from a chat box. You describe what you want, the AI writes the code, and a preview appears beside the chat. There is no canvas to drag things around. You change the design by asking again, or by editing the code on a paid plan.
For a marketing site, Framer gives you more direct control over how things look. For anything with logic, like “show this customer only their own bookings,” Lovable can do what Framer cannot.
Store, blog and SEO
Store. Neither has a built-in store. Framer’s pricing page lists no native ecommerce. Lovable can build payments into an app, but we could not confirm its payment integration details in the docs. If you sell products, a store builder such as Shopify is the simpler path.
Blog. This is a clear win for Framer. It has a built-in CMS, the editing screen for posts and other repeating content: 2 collections and 1,000 items on Basic, 10 collections and 2,500 items on Pro. Lovable has no CMS. You can ask it to build a blog, but adding posts later may take another prompt or a code edit.
SEO. Framer’s hosting includes pre-rendering and server-side rendering, so search engines get finished pages, and Pro includes site redirects. Lovable projects created after 13 May 2026 also use server-side rendering. Older Lovable projects draw pages in the browser, but Lovable serves ready-made copies to verified search engines, social preview bots and AI crawlers.
AI features
Framer adds AI to a visual builder. Its Framer 3.0 announcement names AI tools to Design, Write, Organize, Analyze and Localize (translate your site). Its pricing FAQ says credits also power Agents. Credits are included on every plan, and you can buy more.
Lovable is AI from top to bottom:
- Build, Plan and Chat modes that write and edit the whole app
- Lovable Cloud backend: a database, logins, server functions and storage
- An AI gateway for adding AI features to your app (usage-based)
- Security scanning on every publish, with a deeper scan on demand
Leaving later
This is the biggest gap between the two. On our exit scores, Lovable scores 9 out of 10 and Framer scores 2.
Framer: its help center says plainly that “Framer does not offer HTML export for self-hosting,” because sites depend on Framer-run services. Framer’s help center also says CMS content can be exported as CSV or JSON with plugins. But the design and pages stay behind, so leaving means rebuilding. Third-party export plugins exist in the Marketplace, but they are not official. You do keep your domain, and Pro’s redirects help when you move.
Lovable: your site is real code. It syncs two ways with GitHub on every plan, and paid plans can download a .zip. Lovable’s FAQ says “Your apps, code, and the content you create with Lovable are yours,” subject to open-source licenses. The catch is skill: running the app somewhere else, along with its database and logins, takes a developer. Database exports are limited to one every 24 hours.

Pick Framer if… Pick Lovable if…
Pick Framer if:
- You need a polished marketing, startup or portfolio website
- You want to edit text and images by clicking, without AI credits
- You want a blog or other repeating content in a built-in CMS
- You want the lower 3-year cost and are fine staying on Framer
Pick Lovable if:
- Your customers need to sign in and see their own information
- You need a database, forms that save records, or a custom workflow
- You want to own the code and maybe hand it to a developer later
- You accept a cost that changes with how much you build
Neither? Look at…
- Webflow, if you want a design-first website with a bigger CMS and a static code export. See Webflow vs Framer.
- Squarespace, if you want a simpler all-in-one site builder. See Framer vs Squarespace.
- Self-hosted WordPress, if you want a website you fully own, with a 10/10 exit score. We build on WordPress every week, and it handles blogs and business sites well.
Questions people ask
Can Framer build an app like Lovable?
Not in the same way. Framer builds websites with pages, a CMS and forms. Lovable builds apps with a database and user logins.
Can I build a normal business website with Lovable?
Yes, but it is usually the harder path. Lovable has no CMS, so routine edits often mean another prompt that uses credits.
Which is cheaper over three years?
In our example, Framer Basic comes to $660.24 with a domain and one Google Workspace mailbox. Lovable Pro comes to $1,050.24 to about $1,590.24, depending on top-ups, plus usage-based Run credits.
Can I export my Framer site?
Not officially. Framer's help center says it does not offer HTML export for self-hosting. CMS content can be exported as CSV or JSON with plugins.
Do I need to know how to code for either?
No. Framer is a visual editor and Lovable works from everyday-language prompts. You would need a developer to move a Lovable app off the platform later.
