The quick verdict

Pick Squarespace if you want a site that looks designed from day one, with hosting, payments and email marketing on one bill. Its Core plan is $29 a month billed yearly, with 0% store transaction fees. You never touch a server or an update.

Pick self-hosted WordPress if you want to own the site and grow it without limits. It cost less in cash over three years in our example, runs thousands of themes and 60,000+ plugins, and scores 10 out of 10 on our exit score against Squarespace’s 5. In return, you handle updates, backups and security, or pay someone to.

This page compares Squarespace with WordPress you install on your own hosting (WordPress.org). For the hosted version, see WordPress.com vs WordPress.org.

For scale, W3Techs counts WordPress on 40.2% of all websites and Squarespace on 2.4%, as of October 2026.

Cost over 3 years

We priced the same small-business site on both: about 10 pages, a blog, a contact form, one business email address, and the option to take an online payment now and then.

Cost itemSquarespace CoreWordPress on SiteGround StartUp
Plan or hosting, 36 months$1,044$467.64
Domain, years 2 and 3$36.96$36.96
Email, 1 user, 3 years$168$252
Premium theme$0$177
3-year total$1,248.96$933.60

How we got there:

  • Squarespace: Core is $29 a month billed yearly, or $348 a year, per Squarespace’s pricing page. It does not list a separate renewal price, so we assume today’s price holds.
  • WordPress hosting: SiteGround StartUp is $2.99 a month prepaid for 12 months ($35.88), then renews at $17.99 a month ($431.76 for years 2 and 3), per SiteGround’s pricing page.
  • Domain: both include a free first year. Neither publishes its renewal price, so we budget $18.48 a year, Namecheap’s published .com renewal.
  • Email: Squarespace Core includes one Google Workspace account free for the first year. Otherwise we price Google Workspace Business Starter from Google: $7 per user a month on the annual plan, or $84 a year.
  • Theme: GeneratePress Premium at $59 a year, the theme add-on we use on the WordPress sites we build. Free themes work too, so this line is optional.
  • Left out: card processing, Squarespace extensions, paid plugins and sales tax.

WordPress comes out $315.36 cheaper here. The biggest WordPress line is the hosting renewal, not the intro price, so compare what hosts charge in year two.

The range is wide on both sides:

  • Squarespace Basic ($19 a month billed yearly) brings Squarespace to $972.96, but adds a 2% fee on store sales and drops JavaScript.
  • Bluehost Starter ($3.99 a month on a 36-month term, $143.64 up front, renewing at $9.99 a month) brings WordPress to $609.60.
  • Kinsta Single 35k (managed WordPress hosting, $30 a month billed yearly) with a Namecheap domain ($11.28 the first year) brings WordPress to $1,557.24, more than Squarespace Core.
Count your time. We build on WordPress every week, and the upkeep is real: core, theme and plugin updates, backups and security checks. On Squarespace that work is done for you. If you will not do it, pay for managed hosting or maintenance and add that to the WordPress column.

Design and ease of use

Squarespace is built around templates made by designers. You pick one, add your content and adjust the style settings. Its Blueprint AI tool generates a starting site from those templates. For many small businesses, that gets a good-looking site live faster than anything else.

WordPress asks more of you at the start. You choose a web host, install WordPress (many hosts do this for you), and pick a theme and a few plugins. There are thousands of free themes in the WordPress.org directory, plus commercial themes and page builders. Elementor Pro, for example, starts at $49 a year for one site.

Code access is the other gap. Squarespace Basic gets a basic code block and a CSS editor; JavaScript and the advanced code block start on Core. WordPress gives you every file: PHP, CSS and JavaScript, custom themes and custom plugins.

Team and media limits on Squarespace are set by plan: 2 contributors on Basic and unlimited from Core, and video hosting from 30 minutes on Basic to unlimited on Advanced. On WordPress, limits come from your host, such as 10 GB of storage on SiteGround StartUp.

Store, blog and SEO

Selling

Squarespace sells from Basic with a 2% transaction fee, and at 0% from Core up. Standard card processing is 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic and Core, falling to 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced. Memberships and digital content carry a separate fee: 7% on Basic, 5% on Core, 1% on Plus and 0% on Advanced.

WordPress sells through WooCommerce, a free plugin with a 0% platform fee. You pay your payment gateway’s rates. Many store features are paid extensions billed yearly; WooCommerce Subscriptions, for example, is $279 a year.

Blogging

Squarespace has built-in blog pages and lets you run several blogs on one site, though only one can be exported. WordPress is a full CMS built for publishing: posts, pages, categories, tags, revisions, comments and custom content types.

SEO

Squarespace includes built-in SEO controls. Its 2025 Refresh added an AI SEO Scanner that suggests titles, descriptions and image alt text, and an AIO Scanner that tracks brand mentions on AI platforms like ChatGPT.

WordPress core has clean permalinks and XML sitemaps (since version 5.5). Plugins such as Rank Math add meta controls, schema and redirects; we use Rank Math on the WordPress sites we build. If search traffic is the main goal, WordPress gives you more levers.

AI features

Squarespace has Blueprint AI, which builds a site from designer-made templates. Its September 2025 Refresh announced Beacon AI, a business guide across the platform, plus AI Product, Discount and FAQ Composers, AI image and video backgrounds, and a Squarespace GPT in the ChatGPT store. Chat-based site generation and an AI Site Scanner were announced as coming soon.

Squarespace meters AI with credits: 10 one-time credits on Basic, then 20, 40 and 120 a month on Core, Plus and Advanced.

WordPress itself does not include an AI site builder. AI writing and design tools come from third-party plugins you choose and pay for separately. If built-in AI help matters to you, Squarespace has the edge.

Squarespace exports a WordPress-format XML file. It carries basic pages, one blog with up to 1,000 comments per post, text and image blocks, and gallery pages. Store, portfolio and index pages, product, audio and video blocks, drafts, style settings and custom CSS stay behind. Products export to CSV, and orders and contacts export too.

That export is aimed at WordPress, which makes Squarespace-to-WordPress the easiest move away from Squarespace. Two catches from Squarespace’s help center: images may not copy into self-hosted WordPress (only links to them come across), and images in the asset library download one at a time. Squarespace suggests importing to WordPress.com instead, which copies images.

WordPress exports posts, pages, comments, categories and tags as a standard XML file that links to your media. To move hosts, you copy the files and database, or take a full backup. Any WordPress host can run the site as-is.

Either way, keep your domain where you control it. Squarespace domains can be transferred out with an auth code; new registrations and recent transfers carry a 60-day lock, and a transfer can take up to 15 days. Our guide to leaving your website builder covers the full checklist.

Which one should you pick?

Pick Squarespace if

  • You want a polished site quickly and do not want to pick hosts, themes or plugins.
  • You want hosting, domain, payments and email marketing on one bill.
  • You sell modestly and can pay for Core or higher to avoid the 2% fee.
  • You do not expect to need custom features or a big content library.

Pick WordPress if

  • You want to own every file and be able to switch hosts any time.
  • Your site depends on content and search traffic.
  • You need custom features, plugins or a WooCommerce store with no platform fee.
  • You, or someone you pay, will handle updates and backups.

Questions people ask

Is Squarespace easier than WordPress?

Yes, for most beginners. Squarespace includes hosting and designer templates, while self-hosted WordPress needs you to choose a host, theme and plugins and keep them updated.

Is WordPress cheaper than Squarespace?

Often, in cash. In our 3-year example WordPress on SiteGround came to $933.60 versus $1,248.96 on Squarespace Core, but managed WordPress hosting can cost more, and upkeep takes time.

Can I move from Squarespace to WordPress?

Partly. Squarespace exports a WordPress-format XML file with basic pages and one blog, but store pages, styles and custom CSS stay behind, and images may not copy into self-hosted WordPress.

Is WordPress better than Squarespace for SEO?

WordPress gives you more control through plugins like Rank Math. Squarespace has built-in SEO controls plus an AI SEO Scanner, and either can rank with good content.

Does Squarespace charge transaction fees?

Only on Basic, which takes 2% of online store sales. Core and higher plans charge 0%, though card processing fees apply on every plan.
