What is no-code?
The short answer
No-code means building a website, app or workflow with visual tools instead of writing code. Website builders like Wix, Squarespace, Webflow and Framer are no-code tools. You trade some flexibility, and often the ability to take your site elsewhere, for speed and a much lower cost than hiring a developer.
What it means
No-code tools let you build software by clicking, dragging and filling in settings. The tool writes the code for you behind the scenes.
For websites, no-code is the norm. If you have built a site on Wix or Squarespace, you have used a no-code tool.
You may also hear low-code (mostly visual, with the option to add code) and vibe coding (describing what you want to an AI that writes real code). They overlap, but they aren’t the same thing.
How it works
A no-code builder gives you ready-made parts: page sections, forms, galleries, store pages and a CMS for blog posts. You combine and style them in a page builder. The platform turns your choices into working code and hosts the result.
| Approach | What you do | What you get | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| No-code | Drag, drop, configure | A site that runs on the platform | Wix, Squarespace, Framer |
| Low-code | Mostly visual, some code | More control, still platform-based | Webflow with custom code |
| Vibe coding | Describe it in everyday words | Real source code | Lovable, Bolt, v0 |
| Open-source CMS | Install, configure, extend | Full control and ownership | Self-hosted WordPress |
Why it matters when you build a site
No-code is fast and cheap. Clutch reports that designers who work on builders like Wix, Squarespace or Webflow typically charge $25 to $49 an hour, while web design agencies typically charge $100 to $149. Many owners skip the designer entirely.
The cost is control. The layout you build lives on the platform, and so does much of your content. On our exit scores, Framer scores 2 out of 10, Wix and Hostinger score 3, and Squarespace scores 5. Webflow scores 6 because paid workspaces can export a static copy of the site.
That doesn’t make no-code a bad choice. For a local business that needs a clean five-page site, it’s often the right one. Just know what you’re signing up for. Our guide to builder vs WordPress vs agency lays out the options side by side.
How the big builders handle it
- Wix: drag-and-drop with a free plan (Wix ads, no custom domain). Paid plans start at $17 a month billed yearly. Wix also offers an AI builder that creates a site from a single prompt.
- Squarespace: template-led, no free plan, 14-day trial. Plans start at $19 a month billed yearly ($25 billed monthly).
- Webflow: deeper visual control for designers. The free Starter plan is limited to 2 static pages on a webflow.io address; Basic is $15 a month billed yearly ($18 billed monthly).
- Framer: design-led, with Basic at $10 a month billed yearly.
- WordPress.com: hosted WordPress with no server to manage, and plugins on every paid plan.
- Hostinger: an AI builder sold inside hosting plans, from $2.99 a month on a 48-month term, renewing at $10.99 a month.
Common mistakes
- Thinking no-code means no learning. You still need to plan pages, write copy and understand basics like SEO.
- Hitting plan limits late. Webflow’s Basic plan has no CMS, and Framer caps Basic at 30 pages. Check limits against your plans for the next two years, not just launch day.
- Ignoring add-on costs. Many apps in the Wix App Market carry their own monthly fees on top of the plan.
- Skipping the exit question. Ask what you can export before you build, not after.
- Assuming no maintenance. The platform updates the software, but content, forms and settings still need someone’s attention.

Questions people ask
Is no-code good enough for a business website?
For most small business sites, yes. The trade-off is that the site usually can't leave the platform, so check export options before you build.
What is the difference between no-code and low-code?
No-code tools are fully visual. Low-code tools are mostly visual but let you add your own code for things the editor can't do.
Is WordPress no-code?
WordPress can be used without code through its block editor, themes and plugins, but it's an open-source CMS you install and maintain, not a no-code platform in the usual sense.
Is vibe coding the same as no-code?
No. No-code tools assemble ready-made parts on their own platform. Vibe coding tools write real source code from your prompts, which you can often take elsewhere.
