Comparison
Squarespace vs GoDaddy: which is better in 2026?
The short answer
Pick Squarespace if you want polished templates, published store fees and a strong blog in one account. Pick GoDaddy, whose builder is now Airo AI Builder, if low cost comes first and you are happy to build by describing your site to an AI. In our 3-year example GoDaddy Starter costs $657.62, against $972.96 on Squarespace Basic and $1,248.96 on Core. Both score 5/10 on leaving later, though GoDaddy's score is provisional.

The quick verdict
Pick Squarespace if design and polish matter most. Its designer-made templates look finished with little effort, its pricing page publishes every card rate and store fee, and blogging, scheduling, email marketing and a store sit in one account.
Pick GoDaddy if cost matters most and you are happy to build by describing your site to an AI. GoDaddy’s builder is now Airo AI Builder, which writes your site as code you can download on paid plans. It is the cheaper of the two by a wide margin, but GoDaddy publishes far less detail about payments, blogging and SEO.
Side by side
| Squarespace | GoDaddy Airo AI Builder | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting price | Basic: $19 a month billed yearly ($25 billed monthly) | Starter: $9.99 a month billed yearly ($19.99 billed monthly) |
| Top plan | Advanced: $99 a month billed yearly ($139 billed monthly) | Ultimate: $99.99 a month billed yearly ($199.99 billed monthly) |
| Free plan | No. 14-day free trial | Yes, 50 AI credits a month; publishing needs a paid plan |
| Ecommerce fees | 2% on Basic, 0% on Core and up, plus card processing from 2.5% + $0.30 | No fees or processing rates published |
| Exit score | 5/10 | 5/10 (provisional) |
| Best for | Creatives, service businesses, small shops | Low budgets, AI-first builds, several small sites |
Prices come from the Squarespace pricing page and GoDaddy’s Airo AI Builder page. On both, billing yearly is cheaper: Squarespace saves roughly 24% to 29%, and GoDaddy’s yearly rate is half its monthly rate.
The free options differ. Squarespace gives every new site a 14-day free trial and needs a paid plan to publish. GoDaddy’s free plan needs no credit card and lets you build unlimited sites and apps, but a third-party review from Business.com says you cannot publish without upgrading.
The exit score is our 10-point measure of how much of your site you can take with you if you leave. Compare every builder on the exit scores page.
Cost over 3 years
We priced the same small-business site on both: about 10 pages, a blog, a contact form, one business email address, and the option to take an online payment now and then. GoDaddy Starter covers one published site with selling, so that is our GoDaddy plan. On Squarespace we show both Basic and Core, because the choice between them changes the total.
| Cost item | Squarespace Basic | Squarespace Core | GoDaddy Starter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plan, 36 months billed yearly | $684 | $1,044 | $359.64 |
| Domain, years 2 and 3 | $36.96 | $36.96 | $45.98 |
| Email, 1 user, 3 years | $252 | $168 | $252 |
| 3-year total | $972.96 | $1,248.96 | $657.62 |
How we got there:
- Plans: Squarespace Basic is $19 a month and Core $29 a month, billed yearly. GoDaddy Starter is $9.99 a month billed yearly. Neither company lists a separate renewal price for its plans, so we assume today’s prices hold. Check the renewal line at checkout.
- Domain: both include a free domain for the first year on yearly plans. GoDaddy says its free domain renews “at current prices,” and its .com page lists renewals at $22.99 a year. Squarespace does not show its renewal price, so we budget $18.48 a year, Namecheap’s published .com renewal.
- Email: Squarespace Core includes one Google Workspace account free for the first year. Basic does not, and GoDaddy’s plan page lists no bundled mailbox. We price Google Workspace Business Starter at $7 per user a month on the annual plan, or $84 a year. See email hosting if this is new to you.
- Left out: card processing, paid extensions and sales tax.
GoDaddy Starter is $315.34 cheaper than Squarespace Basic and $591.34 cheaper than Core in this example. Nearly all of the gap is the plan price.
Squarespace Basic or Core?
Basic saves $120 a year over Core, but it charges a 2% fee on online store sales and 7% on digital content and memberships. Once your store sells more than $6,000 a year, the 2% fee costs more than the upgrade. Core also adds JavaScript, the advanced code block and unlimited contributors (Basic allows 2).
What changes the math on GoDaddy
- Paying monthly. Starter at $19.99 a month is $719.64 over three years for the plan alone, and the free domain needs an annual purchase.
- More than one site. Professional publishes 10 sites and adds team access. The same setup on Professional billed yearly totals $1,197.62.
- Card fees. GoDaddy does not publish its processing rates, so you cannot price sales yet. Squarespace charges 2.9% + $0.30 per card sale on Basic and Core, and 3.2% + $0.30 on premium cards.

Design and ease of use
Squarespace is template-led. You start from a designer-made template and adjust fonts, colors and layout. Its Blueprint AI tool builds a starting site from those templates, adapted to your industry. The result tends to look polished with little effort, which is why creatives and service businesses like it.
Custom code depends on the plan. Basic gets a basic code block and a CSS editor. Core and up add the advanced code block and JavaScript.
GoDaddy Airo AI Builder is prompt-first. You describe what you want and the AI generates a website or a simple web app as code. That is closer to vibe coding than to editing a template. On paid plans you can download the code as a zip, edit it on your own computer and upload it again.
What that means day to day:
- If you want to see the design and adjust it by eye, Squarespace is the more familiar editor.
- If you would rather type “add a pricing section” and let the AI do it, Airo gets you to a first draft fast.
- Airo caps AI work with monthly credits: 50 on Free, 150 on Starter, 300 on Professional and 750 on Ultimate.
Neither company publishes a template count on the pages we checked.
Store, blog and SEO
Store
Squarespace publishes its full fee table. Store transaction fees are 2% on Basic and 0% on Core, Plus and Advanced. Card rates are 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic and Core, 2.7% + $0.30 on Plus and 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced. ACH bank payments cost 1.5% on Basic and 1.0% on the other plans. Plus adds a reserved cart with a timer and advanced merchandising.
Every paid GoDaddy plan lists “sell unlimited products and services.” GoDaddy promises “quick and secure payment processing” but does not publish rates or store limits on the plan page. If you plan to sell, ask for the rate first. Our transaction fees explainer covers the difference between platform fees and card processing.
Blog
Squarespace has a built-in blog, and you can run several blogs on one site, with comments. GoDaddy has not documented blog features for Airo on the pages we checked. Because the AI builds your site as code, ask it for a blog while you are still on the free plan and see what you get.
SEO
Squarespace has built-in SEO controls, and in September 2025 it added an AI SEO Scanner that suggests page titles, descriptions and image alt text. GoDaddy’s plan page does not detail SEO settings for Airo. Neither builder will rank a site by itself. Your content and reputation do that.
AI features
Squarespace adds AI to a design-first editor. Blueprint AI generates a starting site from designer templates. Beacon AI, announced September 30, 2025, is an AI business guide across the platform. Squarespace also offers AI composers for products, discounts and FAQs, an AIO Scanner that tracks your brand’s mentions in AI platforms like ChatGPT, and AI-generated image and video backgrounds. AI use is metered with credits: 10 one-time credits on Basic, then 20, 40 or 120 a month on Core, Plus and Advanced.
On GoDaddy, the AI is the builder. Airo AI Builder creates websites and web-based apps from prompts, metered by monthly AI credits. Because the output is code, paid plans can download it.
Both meter AI with credits. Squarespace Basic includes the fewest, 10 credits that do not renew, so plan on Core or higher if you expect to use the AI tools often.
Leaving later
Both score 5 out of 10, but they leave different things behind. GoDaddy’s score is provisional because key export details are not documented.
| Exit score part | Squarespace | GoDaddy |
|---|---|---|
| Content (pages, posts) | 1 of 2 | 1 of 2 |
| Design | 0 of 2 | 1 of 2 |
| Code | 0 of 2 | 1 of 2 |
| Store and customer data | 2 of 2 | 0 of 2 |
| Domain | 2 of 2 | 2 of 2 |
| Total | 5/10 | 5/10 |
Squarespace exports a WordPress-format file with your basic pages, one blog with its posts and gallery pages. Store, portfolio and index pages, video, audio and product blocks, drafts, style settings and custom CSS stay behind. Images download one at a time. On the plus side, products export to CSV, and orders and contacts export too. Domain transfers are documented: turn off the domain lock, get an auth code by email and give it to your new registrar.
GoDaddy offers a “Download your code” zip on paid plans and says “everything you build with Airo AI Builder belongs to you.” So the design and code can leave in some form, which Squarespace cannot match. But GoDaddy does not say whether the zip includes your database, uploaded images, orders or customers, which is why data scores 0.
Pick by what you would need to keep. If it is store records, Squarespace documents more. If it is the site itself, GoDaddy’s code download goes further.
On both, the simplest protection is to register your domain with an outside domain registrar and connect it. Our guide to leaving your website builder walks through the full process.
Pick Squarespace if…
- You want a polished, designer-made look without hiring a designer.
- You want published card rates and store fees before you commit.
- You plan to blog seriously, or run more than one blog.
- You want scheduling, email marketing and a store in one bill.
- Your store data (products, orders, contacts) must be easy to export.
Pick GoDaddy if…
- Budget comes first: Starter is $9.99 a month billed yearly.
- You would rather describe your site to an AI than design it by hand.
- You want to download the code the AI writes.
- You run several small sites: Professional publishes up to 10 and Ultimate up to 50.
- You want a free plan to experiment on before you pay anything.
Neither? Look at these
- Wix has a free plan you can publish on, thousands of templates and its Harmony AI builder. Its exit score is lower, at 3/10. See Wix vs GoDaddy.
- Framer suits design-led marketing sites. See Framer vs Squarespace.
- Self-hosted WordPress scores 10/10 on exit because you own every file and the database. You take on hosting and upkeep. We build on WordPress every week, and our Squarespace vs WordPress comparison covers the trade-offs.
